Choosing a hose for a classic car

Fuel, oil, air and cooling hoses do not have the same requirements. Before ordering, check the inside diameter, required length and fluid carried. A universal hose is not automatically suitable for every application.

What to check

• inside and outside diameter;
• available length;
• fluid type;
• temperature and surroundings;
• bends, rubbing and heat sources;
• suitable clamp type;
• compatibility with the vehicle and fitting position.

Hose and clamp

The clamp must match the actual outside diameter of the fitted hose. Tighten it enough to seal without crushing or cutting the hose. Inspect older hoses regularly, especially near heat or vibration.

Before replacing a hose

Photograph the installation before removing it, note the direction of flow and replace any hose showing cracks, hardening or leaks. If the hose relates to fuel, braking or safety, have the choice checked by a qualified professional.
